Biographical history
W. Stanford Reid (1913-1996) was the first chair of the History Department at the University of Guelph beginning with the school's founding in 1965 until 1970. Educated at Westminster Seminary and the University of Pennsylvania, Reid was an ordained Presbyterian minister and had taught previously at McGill University. Reid oversaw the development of Guelph's history department as well as the creation of its graduate programs. He founded the Scottish Studies program at the University and was instrumental in the acquisition of an extensive collection of related archival material. W. Stanford Reid retired from the university in 1978 and became professor emeritus in 1979.

Scope and content
File consist of Reid's scholarly work, professional activities and correspondence. Records include research notes, various articles published by Reid, notes and correspondence related to the organization of the 16th Century Studies Conference (1979), and the creation of a festschrift for Paul Wooley edited by Reid as well as course development notes for classes taught by Reid at McGill University and the University of Guelph. The fonds also hold ten boxes of correspondence related to Reid's personal and professional life.
