        History

        Ordained in 1817, Rev. Thomas Christie (1783-1870), originally from Holm, Orkney Islands, Scotland, was one of the first missionaries to be sent to Canada by the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, arriving in Montreal in 1832. He preached in Kingston and the Bay of Quinte area, until the fall of 1833 when he settled in West Flamborough. Although West Flamborough served has his headquarters, Rev. Christie continued to travel extensively, preaching as far east as Gananoque and Kingston, Hamilton to the west and Fergus to the north. He organized churches and congregations in West Flamborough, St. George, Eramosa, Chippewa, Beverly, Kirkwall, Guelph, Hamilton, Ancaster, and Dundas.
