History
The Canadian Dairymen's Association (CDA) was founded at Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario in 1867, where the first cheese factory in Canada had been established in 1864. The Association’s goal was to foster mutual improvement in the science of cheesemaking.
The Ontario Dairymen’s Association was formed in 1872 when the Belleville district representatives broke away from the CDA. Due to grant funding obligations, however, the two groups joined back together in 1873 and formed The Dairymen’s Association of Ontario, with annual conventions held in Belleville once every three years. This arrangement continued until 1877 when the association divided yet again, this time into the Dairymen's Association of Western Ontario and the Dairymen's Association of Eastern Ontario.
A third group, the Creameries Association of Ontario, formed in 1885. In 1897, the Creameries Association and the Western and Eastern Ontario Dairymen’s Associations were united into two groups yet again, this time known as the Butter and Cheese Associations of Eastern and Western Ontario, respectively. In 1900, the names of these two groups reverted back to what they were in 1877: the Dairymen's Association of Western and Eastern Ontario, respectively.
In 1889, the Ontario associations became members of the Dominion Dairymen’s Association.
