        History

Don Head Farms consisted of hundreds of acres of land in present-day Richmond Hill, located in the Township of Vaughan in York County, Ontario. The farm was originally purchased in the 1850s by members of the Patterson family. William Redelmeier, his wife Iska, and sons Ernest and Francis purchased the land from the estate of John D. Patterson in 1941. They named the property Don Head Farms, which at its peak was 514 acres, and became famous for their Southdown sheep and Aberdeen Angus and Jersey cattle. By 1982, the farms were called The Patch Farms. By 1990, Ernest’s son, Bill, had taken over the farm, which had been renamed Southbrook Farms. Bill evolved the family’s small roadside stand to a thriving farm market and also created a boutique winery. The Aberdeen Angus and Jersey herds had been dispersed by 1995.
