Biographical history
William Richard Graham (1875-1958), originally from near Belleville, Ontario, graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) in 1892 (Associate) and 1894 (BSA). After graduation, Graham lectured at the OAC and became Head of the Department of Poultry Husbandry in 1899, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1940. He became a professor in 1908. Known as the father of the modern poultry industry in Canada, Graham developed the Barred Plymouth Rock bird and pioneered bred-to-lay flocks, the poultry feed business and egg quality controls. He established a number of Ontario Breeding Stations to maintain purebred flocks and supply eggs. Graham was the first President of the Poultry Science Association and was influential in creating the World Poultry Science Association. He was inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame posthumously in 1986.
