Biographical history
Lillian “Lillie” Ann Beattie (1885-1966) was born in Waterloo Township, Waterloo County, Ontario on December 31, 1885, a daughter of Francis Walker Beattie (1850-1933) and Janet Fleming (1854-1945). A graduate of the Macdonald Institute in 1913, Beattie worked as a chartered life insurance underwriter with the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada and was also a dietician and dog breeder.

The collection contains a typescript with manuscript edits of “Working for Shirts: Account of Experiences at Home, Blair, Ont. and at Macdonald Institute, 1911-1913” by Lill A. Beattie. Correspondence, notes, dining room duties related to her work as a dietician in hospitals in London, Stratford, Toronto, Guelph, and Galt (including Speedwell Hospital and Guelph Convalescent Hospital in Guelph and the Galt Hospital in Galt, Ontario), and a photograph of Cocker Spaniels at a dog show, are also included.
