History
Monteith House, located on Lake Rousseau, was founded about 1865 as the Ro Seau Hotel. John Monteith (1838-1902), owner of the Allandale Hotel in Barrie, Ontario, purchased the hotel in 1878. John was born on Manitoulin Island to Scottish-born parents. He and his wife, Mary Ann Wright (b. 1852), had three children: George B. Monteith (1872-1925), Charles Arthur Monteith (1874-1919), Albert “Bert” Monteith, and Florence Monteith (1877-1959), who married Robert John “Jack” Abbs (1874-1939). Large additions were added in 1878, 1883, and 1887. After John’s death, his children operated the hotel for another 35 years. The Shopsowitz family of Toronto purchased the hotel in 1939, renaming it the Monteith Inn. The family operated the hotel until 1949, when they sold it to Adolph Goodmund. A year later, in November 1950, the Monteith Inn burned to the ground, likely by arson.
Besides his involvement in the running of Monteith House, George B. Monteith operated the George Monteith Fur Company in Toronto. It was located initially at 13 Church Street in 1910 to 1911 and then at 21 Jarvis Street from 1912 to 1925. An adventurer, fur-trapper, and hunter, George Monteith participated in multiple expeditions, including with the Scott Expedition to the Arctic in 1912.
