        History

The Goold, Shapley, and Muir Company Limited was founded in Brantford, Ontario in 1892 by Edward Lyman Goold (1849-1920) of the Goold Bicycle Co, William H. Shapley (b. 1856), and John Muir (1850-1934). The company manufactured windmills, steel lookout towers, concrete mixers, pumps, industrial wood tanks, and gasoline engines and tractors. They introduced the Ideal tractor line in 1907 with the 35-18 and 50-25 models. The Ideal Junior tractor, model 24-12, was added later. To expand the company’s western market, an office was opened in Winnipeg in 1910. In 1918, the Ideal line was replaced with the Beaver tractor, which used a Waukesha engine and friction drive transmission.

The Goold, Shapley, and Muir Company was acquired by Beatty Brothers Limited of Fergus in 1934.
