Smibert Family fonds

The fonds include documents relating to James Smibert (1776-1863), a weaver from Peebles, Scotland who immigrated to London, Canada West, around 1818. The fonds includes family correspondence, transcripts, a bibliography and obituary, as well as a photocopy of Smibert's gravestone.

Documents are arranged as follows:

  1. Letter from Thomas Smibert (Peebles Scotland) to brother James Smibert (London, Upper Canada) dated 29 March 1825 regarding Thomas' leather tanning business.

  2. Letter from Thomas Smibert to James Smibert dated 14 August 1828 updating James on family news and the tannery's economic troubles.

  3. Letter from Thomas to James dated August 1833 updating family matters.

  4. Letter from Thomas Jr. to uncle James Smibert dated 30 September 1840 informing James of the death of Thomas Sr.

  5. Letter to Elizabeth Smibert Harrison from cousin Margaret in Scotland dated July 1863 regarding Elizabeth's father's death. Only 1 page of letter survives.

  6. Letter from George Smibert in Scotland (youngest son of James in Canada) to family in Canada dated 11 July 1869 regarding his visit to Edinburgh and his return to Canada.

  7. Letter from James (nephew of pioneer James in Canada) in Westpoint, Connecticut to uncle James in Canada dated 6 November 1854 regarding trip to Scotland.

  8. Story of James Lambert (Smibert) from Chambers Edinburgh Journal (vol 5 no 239, August 27, 1836).

  9. A Story about James Smibert entitled "Things As They Are In America" from Chambers Journal of Popular Literature (Sat. 22 April, 1854).
