The fonds contains a photograph album containing 48 photographs and 8 other loose photographs of Sergeant John Lister (b. 1893) and other soldiers (presumably friends and family members) in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force stationed in Cairo during the First World War. 8 photographs of the funeral procession of Sultan Hussein Kamel and various local military scenes are also included. The collection also includes two official printed documents detailing Lister's military service with the 1st Scottish Horse Regiment and the Army Service Corps, a typed sheet detailing his journey from Morpeth to Lemnos and later onto Cairo, a typed sheet entitled "Translation of a Turkish Officer's Letter to His Wife," a two-page prayer entitled "After Morning Parade. Quicunque Vult" regarding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Egypt, a poem entitled "When" on being refused to drink at the Savoy Hotel, Cairo, and documents relating to his post-war career as a clerk and the birth of his daughter.
The material in the fonds shows evidence of Lister’s experience of life in Cairo, and his frustrations with the conflicting General Commanding Officers (GOCs) of Egypt, the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, and the Levant Base. This group of items also documents the period in Egypt's history just prior to the 1919 Revolution against British occupation.
Lister, JohnThe collection contains two letters written by Graham Binny, a Scottish lawyer, Thomas Bett, and Samuel Hackett to John Morris, Canada East, in 1851. The first letter, written by Graham Binny on January 8, 1851, is requesting more family information to prove Morris' claim concerning his share of the Morgan Estate in Scotland. The second half of this letter written by Samuel Hackett explains to Morris that he must hurry with the required information as it is "easier to interrupt the proceedings of a rival claimant" than change a final decision. The second letter, also by Binny, dated November 28, 1851, is updating Morris on pre-trial preparations. The second part of the letter, 19 Nov. 1851, from Thomas Bett (likely employed by Binny) gives recollections of people regarding the family relations of the Morgans in an attempt to provide links to Morris). The letters contain philatelic markings on back of the self-sealed letters.
