The collection includes two holograph Ontario diaries by Alexander D. Bruce, one 61 page diary (March 1884-April 15, 1885), one 64 page diary (April 10, 1886 to April 23, 1887), one 135 page page (1867), three holograph letters and 4 cheese factory related documents, Crofting Agreement dated Markham, 23 April, 1844 plus 9 original photos of family members and one large photo copy of 15 other family members, These Bruce family members were very successful Scottish emigrants in 1842 to Upper Canada (Markham area) in business, farming, milling, (Carrick Millks renamed later to Bruce's Mill). They were all very active politically as evidence by the content, authors, and other people referred to.

McKinnon Family fonds

The McKinnon Family fonds contains correspondence, legal and business documents, and photographs relating to the genealogy of the McKinnon family and Clan McKinnon of Edinburgh, Colonsay and Mull, Scotland, and Erin Township and Guelph in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. A blueprint genealogical chart for James Winstanley of Braunston and two certificates of appointment for Robert Lachlan McKinnon from 1928 are included, as well as other genealogy notes and tables, correspondence, and some research notes and publications.

Among the family papers are letters from the late 1800s when members of the McKinnon family unsuccessfully tried to recover the Russian estate of Catherine McKinnon (ca.1778-1858). Catherine had been a governess for forty years in the imperial households of Czar Alexander I and Czar Nicholas II.

Papers related to Robert Lachlan McKinnon (1872-1954), a Guelph lawyer, are also included. Correspondence between Robert and various relatives in Scotland between 1933 and 1944 are also included. These letters include genealogical research and also discuss daily life in Scotland and Canada during the Second World War.

Nigel Tranter fonds

The fonds contains Nigel Tranter’s typescript and manuscript research material related to his 1985 book, A Traveller’s Guide to the Scotland of Robert the Bruce. The fonds contains manuscript pages which consist of original writing on the burghs of Scotland, lists of the principal historical characters, possible photography subjects, and proposed locations to be described along with map references. The majority of the typescript text concerns towns and other places which were significant in the life and reign of Robert the Bruce. There are also descriptions of weaponry and armour, styles and titles, government, knighthood and chivalry and the contemporary church. A typed letter to Mr. C Kithly of York, in which Tranter gives answers to detailed historical queries in the "hope all this enables you to get ahead with the production", is also included.

Also includes genealogical notes on the Ogilvie family and the Ogilvie-Tocher-Smith lineage and a partial transcription of the account book.

Charter of John Pennycuik granting to his first born son, Andrew Pennycuik, the lands and barony of Penicuik, the lands of Newbigging, the patronage of Penicuik Kirk and Penicuik Mill, Feb. 20, 1591 and Instrument of Sasine confirming to Andrew Pennycuik the lands and barony of Penicuik, etc. after a charter of John Pennycuik's, his father, Feb 27, 1591. 2 vellum documents, soiled with faded ink. The charter is signed by John Pennycuik and five witnesses; the instrument is drawn up by David Robeson, notary public of St. Andrews.
