        History

James Innes McIntosh Jr. (1888-1960), born in Toronto, was the son of James Innes McIntosh Sr. (1858-1930) and Helen Jean MacDonald (1862-1902), who’s parents all originated from Scotland. James Sr. and Helen had four other children: Isabel (1886-1888), Margaret Alice (1887-1965), Evan MacDonald (1890-1892), and Mary MacDonald (1894-1978).

When he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the 2nd Canadian Pioneers in Toronto on March 13, 1916, James Jr. worked as a chauffeur. He served in France with the Canadian Engineers Mechanical Transport Company (Royal Canadian Army Service Corps) and was demobilized in June 1919. James Jr. married Frances Florence Stone (1904-2000) in 1924 and died in Toronto in 1960.

James Jr.’s sister, Mary (1894-1978), was a student at Westbourne School in Toronto in 1912 and later attended Macdonald Institute in 1916-1917. She married Clifford Allen (1891-1954) in 1927.

James Jr. and Mary’s father, James Sr. (1858-1930), was the owner and editor of the Guelph Mercury from 1898 to 1929. He had purchased the newspaper from his material uncle, James Innes (1833-1903). Innes, who had worked as a journalist for The Globe and the British Colonist in Toronto, as well as the Morning Banner in Hamilton, became editor of the Guelph Advertiser in 1861 and the co-owner of the Guelph Mercury in 1862. The two newspapers were amalgamated in 1873 to form the Guelph Mercury and Advertiser.
