        History

Founded in Toronto in 1979, the B.A.A.N.N. Theatre Centre was originally a shared facility for five experimental theatre companies: Buddies in Bad Times, Autumn Leaf Theatre, AKA Performance Interface, Necessary Angel, and Nightwood Theatre. It began as a place where each company could come, rehearse, and get opinions on new works and performances from like minded people. By the mid-1980's, the five founding members had left, but Theatre Centre continued to help new companies develop and provide them with a creative space in which to work. In 2002, Theatre Centre premiered its first festival, an innovative biennial event, Free Fall, which was dedicated to boundary testing national and international works. In 2014, the Theatre Centre became a live arts hub and incubator in the historic Carnegie Library building in Toronto.
