History
Founded in 1971 by Tom Hendry, Martin Kinch, John Palmer, Toronto Free Theatre was one of Toronto's leading alternative theatres with a reputation for presenting provocative and innovative work. The company had an on-going relationship with many now well-known actors, playwrights, and directors including Paul Gross, Hrant Alianak, Fiona Reid, and Jacquie Burroughs.
In 1981, Guy Sprung took over as Artistic Director. It was during his tenure that he co-founded Canadian Stage. Toronto Free Theatre merged into Canadian Stage in 1988.
