        History

        Harold Shipley Turner (1895-1975), the son of George Turner (1864-1954), a farmer, and Caroline Emma Shipley (1867-1955), was born in Tuckersmith Township, Huron County, near Seaforth. During the First World War, Turner enlisted in March 1916 and served overseas with the 10th Canadian Railway Troops. After the war, Turner was appointed customs and collection office in Goderich, a position he held until his retirement.

        Turner was a hobbyist, collector, and local history enthusiast. He collected stamps, militaria, and agricultural material, was influential in the founding of the Huron County Museum, and was an early member of the Blyth Steam Club.
