History
The University of Guelph was established on May 8, 1964, when the Ontario Agricultural College (1874), the MacDonald Institute (1903), and the Ontario Veterinary College (1862; moved to Guelph in 1922) were amalgamated into a single body by the Ontario Legislature in The University of Guelph Act. Wellington College was also established in 1964 to offer degree programs in the arts and sciences.
In 1969, five years after its founding, Wellington College was divided into the College of Arts, the College of Physical Science, and the College of Social Science, and the Macdonald Institute was renamed the College of Family and Consumer Studies. The College of Biological Sciences was established in 1971. In 1989, the College of Physical Science merged with the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC)’s School of Engineering to form the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and in 1998 the College of Social Science and the College of Family and Consumer Studies joined to create the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS). The College of Management and Economics - renamed the College of Business and Economics (CBE) in 2014 - was established in 2006 from commerce, management, and economics degrees and courses in the CSAHS, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and the OAC. In 2019, the CBE was renamed the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.
