        History

Established in 1976 by playwrights Michael Hollingsworth and Deanne Taylor. It became fixture of Toronto’s indie theatre scene, noted for its stripped-down “black-box” production designs and multi-media spectacles. Notable productions include Hollingsworth’s satirical sendups of Canadian history in his play-cycle “The History Of The Village Of The Small Huts” and Taylor’s “Vox Pop” cabarets. In 1982, Taylor ran for mayor of Toronto under the slogan “ART v. Art.” She joined the race as a protest candidate against the incumbent, Art Eggleton. Taylor died in 2020, though VideoCabaret continues to produce new programming under Hollingsworth’s leadership.
