        History

        Originally from Dublin, Ireland, John Alexander Wilkinson (1789-1862) came to Canada with the British Army in 1814. He later became a surveyor, judge, and politician in the Parliament of Upper Canada. He married Frances Hands, daughter of William Hands (1757-1838) in 1815 and they settled in Sandwich (Windsor), Ontario. Their children included Mary Anne Wilkinson (1818-1886), wife of Horatio Nelson (1806-1866), Alexander John Armit Wilkinson (1822-1885), who married Williamina Adelaide (Queenie) Lizars (1830-1904), the daughter of Daniel Lizars (1793-1875) and Rabina Hutchinson (b. 1797), and James Hands Wilkinson (1829-1892), who married Emma Agnes Harrett (1831-1905).
